Larry Lucchino Steps Up to the Plate for Prostate Cancer Awareness
Red Sox Exec Says Early Detection Saved his Life in New PSA Video
BOSTON—April 13, 2015—In addition to all his other work duties on this Opening Day 2015, Larry Lucchino, president and CEO of the Boston Red Sox, is taking time to urge Red Sox Nation to come together for a personal cause—prostate cancer awareness.
In a video released today by the non-profit AdMeTech Foundation, creator of The Manogram® Project, Lucchino advocates for early detection of the disease.
“Red Sox Nation has already proven we can beat even the toughest opponents,” Lucchino says in the video. “Just look at our championship banners. As a survivor of prostate cancer, I know prostate cancer can be defeated when detected early.”
In 1999, Lucchino was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent surgery to remove the cancerous tissue.
The video is being released in advance of the AdMeTech Foundation’s 7th Annual Prostate Cancer Awareness Day on Thursday, April 16 at the State House, where Governor Charlie Baker will join legislative leaders, Celtics great Cedric Maxwell, doctors and advocates to call attention to the prostate cancer crisis.
According to AdMeTech Foundation, prostate cancer is the most common major malignancy in the U.S. and in Massachusetts, with 60 percent higher incidence and 250 percent higher mortality in men of color. Although prostate cancer is curable when detected early, it will take the lives of over 600 Massachusetts men in 2015.
“I thank Mr. Larry Lucchino for lending his voice to combating a disease that affects thousands of Red Sox fans. Prostate cancer must be recognized as a public health priority similarly to breast cancer, and we need more leaders and survivors like Mr. Lucchino to speak out,” said Dr. Faina Shtern, President and CEO of AdMeTech Foundation. “This video underscores the goal of Prostate Cancer Awareness Day by encouraging men to take charge of their health care. ”
