MULTIPARAMETRIC MR IMAGING OF PROSTATE CANCER AT HIGH FIELD CLINICAL MR SCANNER

Amita Dave, PhD

Associate Professor

Hedvig Hricak, MD PhD

Professor and Chairman, Department of Radiology

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

A novel approach to generating and analyzing multi-parametric MRI and molecular markers was successfully developed and implemented in phantoms and animal model of prostate cancer at 4.7T.

ADVANCEMENT OF QUANTITATIVE T2 RELAXATION IMAGING AND HIGH SPATIAL RESOLUTION 3D IMAGING FOR IMPROVED TISSUE CHARACTERIZATION AND LOCALIZATION OF PROSTATE CANCER FOR IMAGE-GUIDED THERAPY

Robert Mulkern, PhD

Associate Professor of Radiology

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Novel approach to T2-weighted prostate MRI at 3T was developed and tested in phantoms and finalized for the future clinical trial and implementation.

MRI PREDICTION OF DISEASE PROGRESSION IN PATIENTS DIAGNOSED WITH PROSTATE CANCER AND MANAGED WITH ACTIVE SURVEILLANCE

John Kurhanewicz, PhD

Professor of Radiology and Director, NMR Center

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

This retrospective study demonstrated that mpMRI improved selection of patients for AS. Indeed, it showed that patients with suspicious lesions on mpMRI had a four-fold increase in the risk of Grade upgrading at subsequent biopsies (than did patients without such lesions).

MULTI-PARAMETRIC (MP) PROSTATE MR IMAGE ANALYSIS

Clare Tempany, MD, Professor

Ferenc_A_Jolesz

Ferenc Jolesz, Vice Chair of Radiology

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

This study developed and tested a robust approach to the measurement of prostate cancer volume, based on the 3D image analysis software developed by the world leading academic Surgical Planning Laboratory, which was made widely available due to its open architecture. This groundbreaking work is critical for prostate cancer clinical assessment, treatment planning and monitoring.

EX-VIVO MRI MICROSCOPY OF PROSTATE CANCER AT 9.4T

Dr. Aytekin Oto

Professor of Radiology and Head of Body MRI

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

This study developed a successful original approach for ex vivo MRI of prostate tissue samples and its correlation with pathology at very high field strength. This work had led to new approaches to novel in vivo MRI for the prostate expected to improve sensitivity and specificity for detection of high Gleason score (aggressive) lesions and to pathologic tissue analysis using high resolution 3D ex vivo MR images.

MULTI-PARAMETRIC (MP) PROSTATE MRI FOR IMPROVING PATIENT SELECTION FOR BIOPSIES AND TREATMENT

Dr. Daniel Margolis

Associate Professor of Radiology and Co-Director, Center for Prostate Imaging

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

The goal of this study is to demonstrate mpMRI is a feasible diagnostic tool for improved detection of aggressive prostate cancer and its differentiation from low risk and benign disease (in progress).

Faina Shtern, MD

President

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

The goal of this study is to generate conclusive, statistically powered scientific evidence on the clinical value of mpMRI in the improved risk stratification and elimination of unnecessary biopsies and treatment (in progress).
