NAACP’S NEW ENGLAND AREA CONFERENCE DELEGATES LEARN ABOUT PROSTATE CANCER
AS A LEADING HEALTH CARE DISPARITY IN BLACK MEN
NEAC NAACP Features AdMeTech Foundation’s Workshop on
The Cutting-Edge Advances in Early Detection and Treatment
BEDFORD, MA—September 24, 2015—Juan Cofield, President of the New England Area Conference (NEAC) of NAACP announced that Dr. Faina Shtern, President and CEO of the AdMeTech Foundation, will be hosting a workshop on ending prostate cancer as a leading health care disparity in black men in Massachusetts. This event takes place at the Annual Meeting of NEAC NAACP on Saturday, September 26 as part of National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
During the workshop, Dr. Shtern will lead a discussion on the integration of precision screening and diagnosis with precision, minimally invasive treatment, which is expected to save lives and improve quality of life in countless men. She will be joined by Dr. Jason A. Efstathiou, MD, DPhil., Associate Professor and Director of Genitourinary Division, Department of Radiation Oncology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He also serves as a board member of the Massachusetts Prostate Cancer Coalition (MPCC).
The goal of this event is to inform and mobilize NEAC NAACP delegates in the fight against the disproportionate risk and death toll of prostate cancer in black men. Prostate cancer is the most common major malignancy in the U.S. and in Massachusetts, with 60 percent higher incidence in black men. Even though prostate cancer is curable when detected early, black men have 2.5 times higher mortality than the national and state averages for all races. This disparity in mortality of prostate cancer is greater than of any other malignancies, cardio-vascular diseases, hypertension or obesity.
This event is part of AdMeTech’s joint state-wide campaign with NEAC NAACP and MPCC to bring cutting-edge advances in prostate cancer care from Massachusetts world-leading hospitals to every man, with the focus on the individuals at high risk, their caregivers and doctors. AdMeTech’s mission is to create a Massachusetts model of national leadership in prostate cancer care, research, education and awareness.
